Choices
As seen in the Williams Lake Tribune April 26, 2001
We all have to make them. Sometimes they are clear and easy to make: do you jump from the third storey window or do you take the stairs? If you want to see tomorrow, you have a better chance by taking the stairs. Seems clear to me.
Some other choices aren’t. Take last weekend for instance: take the bike out for a ride or
do I get caught up with the spring yard work? The bike is calling my name like some siren of the trail, yet my yard, and my neighbours would really like it if I actually paid some attention to my place before August!
Last year the bike won and my place started to look like the yard from “Malcolm in the Middle.” If you aren’t up on the Fox Sunday TV lineup, let’s just say that things were looking pretty bad. How bad? Whaddya think of new life forms growing out of the gutter and having to take the rake AND leafblower to the roof? Yup, that bad!
This year I decided to make amends and spent almost my whole Easter weekend thatching, raking and vacuuming my yards. I did give into temptation once and sneak off a ride, but only the one. Last year I could be found screaming down the singletrack with my wife and friends…this year it was domestic drudgery. The only reasoning for my change of behaviour that I can come up with is that I’ll be able to start my crazy season just a little bit later and keep the city council off of my back.
Am I happy about this? It’s hard to say. I love taking care of my yard, really I do, but that bike keeps taunting me. It’s a tough choice, but not for long. The yard is looking great and as of April 29, I am soooo gone.
That’s the day we at the Williams Lake Cycling Club are putting on the Kranked 4 a Day bikefest up at the Rod and Gun Club. All sorts of events are planned such as kids races, Toonie races, swap meet, ramps and ladders, maintenance clinics, and to top it all off dinner and movies! Wow, such a deal! The gang of crazies at Radical Films are showing Kranked 4 to the locals and, trust me, it will be an epic event. These guys are the best of the best when it comes to extreme bike movies filmed in amazing locations.
Bring the whole family and get hooked. I know I already am. And I was normal once….almost.
