WILLIAMS LAKE CYCLING CLUB AND CITY OF WILLIAMS LAKE TO CONSTRUCT WORLD CLASS BIKE PARK IN BOITANIO PARK

Williams Lake – City Council recently approved the construction of a bike park in Boitanio Park. The park, to begin constriction in July, has been professionally designed by one of world’s premier park designers and will continue to enhance the mountain bike experience and associated tourism opportunities in the Cariboo.

The city, the Cariboo Regional District and club have been working collaboratively on this proposal since the fall of 2009, and City Council approved the proposal through the Joint Committee on April 29th.

“The lack of a Bike Park in Williams Lake has meant a significant gap in the riding experience here, which the Cycling Club has been trying to fill for a number of years. The city’s support of this proposal will continue to provide local and visiting riders with a world class experience,” says Mark Savard, club director.

The city and CRD will be providing $45,000 to support the construction of the park, which will cost a total $212,850. The Williams Lake Cycling Club has mobilized a significant contribution to the park through the support of local businesses including Pioneers Log Homes, RB Backhoe Services, United Concrete and more.

“This is a great example of the City and CRD working with a community group to develop a much needed recreational facility for youth. Credit goes to the Williams Lake Cycling Club who has been working hard behind the scenes to make this project a reality,” says Mayor Kerry Cook.

More information on the bike part will be available at the club’s annual fundraiser. Go to the Gibraltar Room on Saturday, May 8th, at 7:00 p.m. to learn more and view two bike films. For more information contact the Williams Lake Cycling Club at wlcc@puddlebike.com or visit Red Shreds Bike and Board Shed or the Barking Spider Bike Shop.

WILLIAMS LAKE CYCLING CLUB SIGNS TRAIL AGREEMENT ON FOX MOUNTAIN

Williams Lake – Known to Bike Magazine as the ‘Shangri-la of Mountain Biking,’ Williams Lake has advanced its reputable trail network into a legal agreement in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts (MTCA).

The new Trails Partnership Agreement will manage the legally established network of mountain bike specific trails on Fox Mountain, a premier riding area in the city. This agreement will support ongoing efforts to increase the tourism opportunities in the Cariboo.

“The Williams Lake Cycling Club has spent considerable time with the ministry in developing this agreement, which will protect our riding areas and ensure they can be safely enjoyed by all,” says Mark Savard, club director.

Williams Lake is one of eight pilot areas in the Province with this type of Agreement, which is designed to support local efforts to increase the availability of mountain bike opportunities in regions and increase tourism spending, according to the MTCA policy.

The agreement requires the Williams Lake Cycling Club to manage the trail network according to specific standards. Trails will be non-motorized and managed to accommodate a safe mountain bike experience.

“The Williams Lake Cycling Club is pursuing similar agreements for the other riding areas in the city, and hopes to have one of the largest, legally established trail networks in the province,” says Justin Calof, who works with the club.

More information will be available at the Club’s annual fundraiser. Come to the Gibraltar Room at 7:00 p.m. on May 8th for a viewing of two bike films and an opportunity to join/support the Club. For more information on the Trails Agreement please contact the Williams Lake Cycling Club at wlcc@puddlebike.com or visit Red Shreds Bike and Board Shed.

Hurray! Summer vacation is here! We are so thankful and lucky to live in such a great place like Williams Lake. The recreational activities such as mountain biking are superb! We love having the trails just outside our backdoor in our quiet neighbourhood. However many other people are also liking the trails and we are happy to share them, BUT the shuttle traffic is getting heavier and faster every year to the trail head of “Hillbilly Deluxe“ on Fox Mountain. I would like to remind all drivers travelling up our road to PLEASE SLOW DOWN! There are a number of families on our road with young children playing nearby and riding their bikes along the road. We are very concerned about their safety with the speeding mountain biking shuttle traffic. We are all is support of this awesome sport of mountain biking, but please use your consideration of others while driving through residential neighbourhoods!

As a novice mountain bike racer, this was a great event for getting my wheels wet. The mostly single-track course had a flow to it that made it a treat to ride. There was a great variety of terrain, technical challenges (manageable for even my limited capabilities), and even some wildlife thrown into the mix. The enduro format gave the event a festival atmosphere which could be enjoyed by riders of all abilities for the entire six hours. Congratulations to the organizers on a great event.

Awesome single track course with technical sections of roots and rocks all set in a Douglas-fir forest typical of Williams Lake riding.

I thoroughly enjoyed the race and the superbly organized and smooth operation. I thought the course was excellent for all levels of riders, and everyone I have talked to agreed.

Looking forward to next year!

Sweet course, excellent organization and a fun group of riders made for a great race! Just about all ingletrack with lots of stuff to keep the suspension working. Recommend a full suspension if your closet has both types. Can’t wait for next year!

The course was more fun and exciting than a triple loop roller coaster, combining the sweetest single track trails that BC has to offer, with technical climbs combined with some super fast and flowing downhill sections. The best course I’ve seen! Time keeping was spot on and professional. The trophies given out after the race were thoughtfully designed handmade original works of art! And the generosity shown by the event organizers in the way of prizes both for top finishers and random draws was really amazing; no other race that I’ve been to even comes close! I can’t wait for next year!!
